Every year, up to 1 billion birds die from window strikes in the United States. In Memoriam was created in collaboration with Melissa Breyer, a journalist who works with the NYC Audubon to monitor window strikes in New York City during migration events. During the 2021 fall migration, Melissa found 626 injured and dead birds spanning over 49 species. This piece is a visual retelling of the somber imagery Melissa continues to share through her volunteer work. Each bird depicted represents a real window strike fatality photographed by Melissa, honoring their lives while bringing light to the impact man-made structures have on the lives of birds.
